Where it comes from

Caliper follows the McDowell format, the one-page, single-column résumé convention popularized by Gayle Laakmann McDowell, the ex-Google/Apple engineer behind Cracking the Coding Interview and CareerCup. It's the layout a generation of software candidates learned as “what a good résumé looks like.”

McDowell's key idea is fast skimmability: keep everything in one column, but align the facts (role, company, dates, location) into clean columns within each entry so a recruiter can scan them in seconds. (It's single-column on the page, not a two-column split.)

Our version comes by way of the open-source resumake.io port of the format, reworked with hairline rules and extra white space.

Adapted from the McDowell résumé format by Gayle Laakmann McDowell (via resumake.io), licensed MIT (resumake.io port).

How it parses

One column and plain text, so it parses cleanly. The “columns” are just aligned tab stops inside a single-column page, not a real two-column layout, and parsers read it in order.

Frequently asked questions

Is the McDowell format multi-column?

No, it's a single-column page. McDowell just aligns key facts (title, company, dates) into columns within each entry so they're easy to skim. That's different from a true two-column résumé.

Who is Gayle Laakmann McDowell?

A former Google/Microsoft/Apple engineer and interviewer, founder of CareerCup, and author of Cracking the Coding Interview. She codified this résumé format from reviewing thousands of engineering résumés.
